말 하기는 쉽지만 행동으로 옮기기 어려운 일이 세상에는 많습니다. 예를 들어 실패했을 때 비관적인 입을 다스리는 것이나 다시 시작하는 것, 비웃음을 참는 것, 숙고하는 것, 용서하고 잊는 것 등이 좋은 예가 될 것입니다. 그런데 하나님께서 크게 쓰신 위인들을 보면 하나 같이 이 어려운 일을 실천한 사람임을 알 수 있습니다. 사사 입다가 바로 그런 사람이었는데, 그는 이 일을 행함으로 이스라엘의 최고 지도자가 되었던 것입니다.
입다는 기생의 아들로 태어났는데, 성장해 가면서 이복형제들의 눈치와 박해는 극에 달했습니다. “너는 우리 어머니가 아닌 다른 여인의 아들이므로 아버지의 유산을 받지 못해!” (삿11:2). 그러나 그 집에서 그의 아버지는 물론 어느 누구도 입다의 아픔을 해아리려 하지 않았습니다. 가정에서 이런 취급을 받으니 동네 사람들도 그를 멸시했고 그 마음에 상처는 깊어만 갔습니다. 사람들은 이런 처지에 놓이면 운명을 탓하며 문제에 매몰되어 자신의 삶을 비관하게 마련입니다. 그러나 입다는 달랐습니다. 믿음의 선택을 통해 상처를 치유하고 지도자로 우뚝 서게 된 것입니다. “이에 입다가 그의 형제들을 피하여 돕 땅에 거주하매 잡류가 그에게로 모여 와서 그와 함께 출입하였더라”(삿11:3). 여기‘잡류’란 우리말의 나쁜 어감으로 의미가 아니라, 사회에서 버림받고 소외된 자들을 말합니다. 입다는 이 잡류에게 자신이 품고 있었던 비전을 나누면서 그들을 군사로 만들어갔던 것입니다.
‘Think Differently!’ 스티브 잡스가 에플에서 좇겨났다가 다시 복귀하면서 내세운 구호입니다. 만약 그가 자신이 받은 상처나 어루만지며 복수의 칼을 갈고 있었다면 창조적인 생각을 할 수 없었을 것이고 그에게 기회가 찾아올 리 없었을 것입니다. 잡스는 애플에서 밀려나 있는 동안, 그 이전에 누구도 생각하지 못했던 인문학적 상상력을 첨단 정보기술에 융합하는 준비를 했고 마침내 아이팟, 아이패드, 아이폰을 개발하여 연달에 히트를 치며 에플을 세계적인 창조기업으로 일으켜 세운 것입니다.
불행한 일이 일어난 것이 모두 내 책임이 없을 수 있지만, 그 일에 대한 반응은 모두 나의 책임입니다. 일본의 한 유명 코미디언은 자기의 세 번째 아버지가 들려준 말이 그 인생을 바꾸었다고 합니다. 그의 세 번째 아버지가 그에게 한 말은 ‘거울은 먼저 웃지 않는다!’는 매우 의미있는 말이었습니다. 그가 세 번째 아버지를 맞이했다면 그의 삶이 얼마나 우울했을지 미루어 짐작할 수 있습니다. 그러나 아이러니하게도 그 세 번째 아버지에게 들은 그 말이 그의 삶을 변화시킨 것입니다.
인간적으로 볼 때, 입다의 삶은 그야말로 우울할 수 있었습니다. 그러나 입다는 돕으로 밀려났을 때 하나님의 말씀에 더 귀를 기울였습니다. 그래서 입다는 하나님의 계시를 받을 수 있었고 그로 인해 잡류들이 몰려왔을 때는 하나님께서 보내신 사람들로 알아보고 그들을 훈련시켜 언젠가 찾아 올 기회를 준비할 수 있었던 것입니다. “얼마 후에 암몬 자손이 이스라엘을 치려 하니라 암몬 자손이 이스라엘을 치려 할 때에 길르앗 장로들이 입다를 데려오려고 돕 땅에 가서 입다에게 이르되 우리가 암몬 자손과 싸우려 하니 당신은 와서 우리의 장관이 되라 하니”(삿11:4-6). 길르앗 지파와 동족의 위기가 입다에게는 기회가 된 것인데, 그를 좇아낸 고향의 장로들이 입다를 찾아와 도움을 청하는 상황이 된 것입니다. 이는 그가 가장 암울한 시간에 하나님의 말씀에 귀를 기울임으로 준비하고 있었기에 찾아 온 기회라고 말할 수 있습니다. 입다는 인간관계를 회복할 기회를 붙잡았고 떨어진 명예를 회복할 기회를 붙잡았으며 조국을 위해 헌신할 기회를 붙잡았고 하나님께 영광을 돌려드릴 기회를 붙잡았던 것입니다.
플로리다를 떠나 고국으로 가는 비행기가 템파지역 항공을 날고 있다고 가정해 봅시다. 이 비행기는 플로리다에 있지만 사람들은 이 비행기를 ‘한국 행 비행기’라고 합니다. 하나님이 중요하게 보는 것은 ‘방향’이지 ‘위치’가 아니라는 사실을 알아야 합니다. 입다의 삶이 이 사실을 증명합니다. 입다는 그 몸은 돕 땅에 있었지만, 그 마음의 방향은 늘 하나님을 향하고 있었기에 삶의 반전을 이룰 수 있었던 것입니다.

There are many things in the world that are easy to say but difficult to put into action. For instance, controlling a painfulmouth in case of failure, starting again, tolerating being laughed at, pondering over, forgiving and forgetting would be good examples. However, if you look at the great men whom God used greatly, you can see that all of them practiced this difficult task. Judge Jephthah was such a person, and he became the supreme leader of Israel by living such a life.
Jephthah was born as the son of a prostitute, but as he grew up, his half brothers harassed and persecuted him. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family, because you are the son of another woman!” (Judges 11:2). However, in the family, neither his father nor anyone else tried to understand Jephthah’s ordeal. Because he was treated in this manner at home, the people in the village also despised him, and the wounds deepened in his heart. When people are in such a situation, they usually blame fate and become pessimistic about their lives because they are immersed in problems. But Jephthah was different. Through the choice of faith, he healed his wounds and stood tall as a leader. “So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a group of adventurers gathered around him and followed him” (Judges 11:3). Here, the ‘scoundrels’ used for the meaning of ‘adventurers’ in the Korean Bible is not a bad word but refers to those who are abandoned by people and alienated from society. Jephthah shared his vision with the adventurers and turned them into soldiers.
‘Think Differently!’ This is the slogan that Steve Jobs put forward when he was kicked out of Apple and then returnedto Apple. If he was sharpening his sword of revenge by touching the wounds he received, he would not be able to think creatively, and the opportunity would not come to him. While Jobs waskicked out of Apple, he prepared to fuse humanistic imagination with cutting-edge information technology, which no one had thought of before. He finally developed technological breakthroughs such as the iPod, iPad, and iPhone, which became smashing hits one after another, raising Apple as a world-class creative company.
You may not be responsible for all of the unfortunate events that have happened, but you are responsible for all of your reactions to them. A famous Japanese comedian confesses that the words of his third father changed his life. What his third father said to him was a very meaningful quip:’The mirror never laughs first!” You can imagine how gloomy his life would have been when the comedian had a third father. But ironically, the words he heard from the third father changed his life.
From a human point of view, Jephthah’s life could have been downright depressing. But Jephthah listened more to God when he was driven away to Tob. So, Jephthah was able to receive God’s revelation, and when the adventurerscame to him, he recognized them as people sent by God and trained them to prepare for the opportunity to come one day. “Some time later, when the Ammonites made war on Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. ‘Come,’ they said, ‘be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites”(Judges 11:4-6).The crisis of the tribe of Gilead and his own people became an opportunity for Jephthah, but the elders of his hometown who had driven him away came to Jephthah and asked for help. Certainly,this was an opportunity that came to Jephthah because he was preparing by listening to God’s Word in his darkest time. Jephthah seized the opportunity to restore human relationships, seized the opportunity to restore lost honor, seized the opportunity to devote himself to his country, and seized the opportunity to glorify God.
Imagine that you’re leaving Florida for your home country and flying over the Tampa area. This plane is in Florida, but people say that it’s a ‘flight to Korea’. You must know that what God sees as important is ‘direction’, not ‘position’. Jephthah’s life attests to this fact. Jephthah’s body was in the land of Tob, but the direction of his heart was always toward God, so he was able to achieve a reversal in his life.
