포스트 모던니즘 시대를 사는 ‘Me Generation’인 현대인에게 ‘순종’은 아마도 가장 인기가 없는 단어일 것입니다. 그러나 우리 믿는 사람들은 ‘믿음’의 동의어가 ‘순종’이라는 이 사실을 명심해야 합니다. 믿음과 순종은 동전의 양면과 같습니다. 믿음과 순종은 하나로 붙어서 나타나야 하는 것입니다. 한편 믿음이 행위로 나타나는 것이 간단한 일은 아닙니다. 우리 안에 죄 성이 있기 때문입니다. 이 죄 성이 인간으로 하여금 지속적으로 하나님의 권위에 도전하도록 하는 것입니다. 인간 타락이후 불순종의 영이 역사하지 않는 곳이 없기 때문입니다. 오죽하면 예수님께서도 십자가에 못 박하시기 전, 겟세마네에서 기도할 때 ‘이 잔이 내게서 지나가기를 원하나이다’라고 기도하셨을까요? 그러니 우리가 살면서 항상 하나님의 뜻에 순종한다는 것은 결코 간단한 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 하나님의 역사를 기대한다면 하나님이 기대하는 대로 살아야 하는데, 그것이 순종입니다.
우리 모두 하나님 앞에 설 때, 세상에서 얼마나 열심히 세상일을 하며 살았나 하는 것은 중요하지 않습니다. 정말 중요한 것은 ‘하나님 말씀에 얼마나 순종하며 살았느냐?’하는 것입니다. 이 점에서 하나님이 당신의 마음에 합한 자라고 크게 칭찬하신 다윗이 위대한 것입니다. “다윗이 하나님께 물어 이르되 내가 블레셋 사람들을 치러 올라가리이까 주께서 그들을 내 손에 넘기시겠나이까 하니 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 올라가라 내가 그들을 네 손에 넘기리라 하신지라”(대상14:10). 이렇게 하나님께 묻고 하나님의 명령에 순종하겠다는 다윗의 모습이 참 감동적이지 않습니까?
싱글들이 맞선보고 왔을 때, 양쪽 친구들은 이렇게 묻습니다. 남자 친구들은 “예쁘냐?,” 여자 친구들은 “뭐 하는 사람이야?”라고 묻는 것입니다. 남자는 여자의 ‘외모’를, 여자는 남자의 ‘능력’을 그 무엇보다 먼저 보는 것입니다. 그러면 하나님은 누군가 택하실 때 어떤 면을 가장 먼저 보실까요? 하나님은 우리가 당신의 말씀에 어디까지 순종하는지, 그것을 가장 중요하게 보십시다. 이와 관련해서 예수님은 “나는 그의 명령이 영생인 줄 아노라”(요12:50)고 하셨습니다. 다윗이 위기의 순간에 하나님의 뜻을 묻는 것은 명령을 따르는 것이 영생인줄 알았기 때문입니다. 이처럼 다윗은 그의 인생에서 가장 잘나갈 때 찾아온 위기 앞에 당황하지 않았고, 그 때도 늘 하던 대로 하나님 앞에 서서 그 명령을 들으려 했습니다. 그리고 마침내 하나님으로부터 말씀이 임했을 때 지체하지 않고 말씀대로 행했습니다. 하나님은 그런 다윗에게 승리를 안겨주셨습니다. 다윗은 위기 때마다 하나님의 명령에 ‘순종함’으로 모든 전쟁에서 승리할 수 있었던 것입니다.
“여호와의 구원은 사람의 많고 적음에 달리지 아니하였느니라”(삼상14:6). 다윗은 전쟁의 승리가 ‘군대의 크기’에 달려있지 않다는 사실을 경험을 통해 확신했습니다. 다윗은 전쟁의 승리는 하나님 말씀에 얼마나 순종했느냐 하는 ‘순종의 크기’에 달린 것임을 증명했습니다. 예수님은 “사람이 나를 사랑하면 내 말을 지키리니 내 아버지께서 그를 사랑하실 것이요…”(요14:23)라고 하셨습니다. 이로 볼 때, 누구든 사랑한다고 하면서 사랑하는 사람의 말을 따르지 않는다면, 그것은 참 사랑이라고 할 수 없습니다. 그러므로 우리가 하나님을 사랑한다면 우리는 그 명령을 반드시 지켜야 합니다. 더구나 하나님의 ‘명령은 영생’이라 하셨으니, 하나님의 명령이 임할 때 무조건 순종하여 이 세상에서부터 영생을 누리는 하나님의 사람들이 되시기 바랍니다.

“Obedience” may be the least popular word to “Me Generation,” the modern people who live in the postmodernism era. But we believers must never forget that the synonym of ‘faith’ is ‘obedience.’ Faith and obedience are like the two sides of one coin. Faith and obedience must be revealed as one. On the other hand, it’s not that simple to live out our faith in actions since we have sinful nature within us. Our sinful nature constantly makes us challenge the authority of God. Since the Fall of humanity, there is no place where the spirit of disobedience does not work. Why do you think that Jesus asked ‘to remove this cup from me’ before he was crucified to the cross? It’s not that easy to obey God’s will in our daily lives. But we must do our best to meet God’s expectation if we expect His work. This is obedience.
When we stand before God, it’s not that important how hard we work for our secular jobs. But it is very important how faithfully we obeyed God’s words. David is great because God considered him as “a man after God’s own heart.” 1 Chronicles 14:10 says, “So David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”The LORD answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”Aren’t you impressed with David who asked God and obeyed his commands?
Friends of both sides of single man and woman have asked each other after their date. The friends of the man asked, “how pretty was she?” But the friends of the woman asked about his job. It means that men look for “physical beauty” while women look for “ability.” But what do you think God look at first when he chooses someone? He looks at how faithfully they obey His words. That is the most important to Him. That’s why Jesus said in John 12:50, “I know that his command leads to eternal life. . .” David asked God when he was facing crises because he knew that obeying God’s word is eternal life. David did not panic when he was facing crises in his life. He just tried to listen to God as he customed to do before. That was why he was able to obey without any hesitation when he had heard God’s words. No wonder God brought David a victory. David was able to win all the battles by obeying God’s words in times of trouble.
“. . . Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few” (1 Samuel 14:6). Through his experiences, David knew for sure that the victory of the battle did not depend on the size of his army, but the size of his obedience. David proved that the victory of the battle depended on how faithfully he obeyed to God’s words. Jesus said in John 14:23, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”Based on this word, we cannot really say that we love someone unless we do the things he/she wants.That is not true love.Therefore, if we love God, we must obey His words. Moreover, since God said that ‘his word is eternal life,’ I want all of you to become the people of God who enjoy eternal life by faithfully obeying His words by faith.
