한 일간지 기자가 공중 화장실 이용 후기를 올린 것이 화제가 된 것이 있습니다. 그는 그 글에서 ‘어느 자리건 앉으면 그 자리에서 볼일을 봐야 한다!’고 했습니다. 후미진 곳에 있는 공중화장실이 다 그렇듯, 기자가 사용한 그 곳에도 낙서가 많았는데, 굵은 글씨로 <오른쪽을 보시오!>라고 써 있어 오른쪽을 보자, <왼쪽을 보시오!>라 써 있었습니다. 그래서 다시 왼쪽을 돌아보니 <뒤로 돌아다 보시오!>라는 써 있는 것이었습니다. 살짝 짜증이 났지만 호기심에 이끌려, 묘한 자세로 뒤를 돌아보았는데, <위를 쳐다 봐!>라고 써 있어서 위를 보니, 거기 이렇게 써 있었던 것입니다니 <뭘 봐 똥이나 싸지!> 그 때 그가 깨달은 것이 ‘화장실 단상’, ‘어느 자리건 앉으면 거기서 볼일에 집중해야 한다!’는 것이었습니다.
오늘 우리는 이 자리에 왜 와서 앉아 있습니까? 하나님을 예배하기 위함입니다. 그러면 예배에 집중하는 것이 오늘 우리가 여기에 앉아 있는 바른 태도입니다. 예배는 세상을 향하던 분주한 발걸음을 멈추고 주안에 머무는 시간입니다. 그렇게 주께 집중할 때 느낄 수 있는 영적인 복이 있습니다. 주 안에서 누리는 부요함입니다. 주께서 서머나 교회에 보낸 편지에 보면, 진정 부요한 사람은 주님이 함께 하심을 믿고 사는 사람입니다. “내가 네 환난과 궁핍을 알거니와 실상은 네가 부요한 자니라…”(계2:9). 주님은 서머나 교회의 고통을 다 알고 있다면서, 실상은 그들이 부요한 자라는 것입니다. 이는 주께서 모든 상황을 아시기에 그들이 겪을 이런 어려움 중에도 함께 하실 것이라는 약속이 담긴 말씀입니다.
한편 요한은 그들과 함께 하시는 주님에 대해 계 2:8에서 이렇게 묘사했습니다. “처음이며 마지막이요 죽었다가 살아나신 이”(계2:8). 우리 가운데 많은 이들이 큰 일이 있을 때만 하나님을 찾고 하나님의 도우심을 구하려 합니다. 직장에 출근하면서 업무를 잘 할 수 있기를 구하는 일이라든지, 옷을 사거나 사람을 만날 때 바른 판단을 할 수 있도록 하나님의 도움을 청하지 않습니다. 사람들이 이런 생각을 하는 이유는 그것은 영적인 일이 아니라 세상일이라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 하나님은 보다 고상하고 신령하며 영적인 일에 관심하실 것이라고 미리 예단하는 것입니다. 그러나 처음이며 마지막이신 우리 주님은 우리 생각과 달리 작고 사소한다고 여기는 일에도 관심을 가지고 계시십니다.
이와 관련해서 다윗이 쓴 시편 7편이 의미가 있는데, 그 표제가 <베냐민인 구시의 말에 대하여 여호와께 한 노래>입니다. 구시라는 인물에 대해 알져진 바는 별로 없습니다. 사울과 같은 베냐민 지파일 뿐이었습니다. 그러면 구시는 다윗에게 별로 대단한 사람이 아니었을 것입니다. 여기서 매우 중요한 사실을 발견할 수 있는데, 그건 다윗의 신실함입니다. “여호와 내 하나님이여 내가 주께 피하오니 나를 쫓아오는 모든 자들에게서 나를 구원하여 내소서 건져낼 자가 없으면 그들이 사자 같이 나를 찢고 뜯을까 하나이다”(시7:1,2). 다윗은 하나님이 도우시면 골리앗도 이기지만, 돕지 않으시면 구시에게도 이길 수 없다고 생각한 것입니다. 골리앗에 대한 다윗의 태도도 훌륭하지만 구시에 대한 다윗의 태도는 더 훌륭한 것입니다. 믿음으로 골리앗을 이기는 사람들이 의외로 구시에게 패하는 일이 많기 때문입니다. 누가 부요한 사람입니까? 이렇듯 하나님과 동행하며 주께서 허락하신 자리에게 그 일이 크든 작든 주님을 의지하는 사람입니다.

An article written by a columnist of a daily newspaper became the talk of the town. He wrote about his own experience after using a public restroom. He wrote, ‘one must do his task wherever he sits.’ Since he used a public restroom behind a busy street, there were lots of doodles. The first one he saw was, ‘look to the right.” When he looked to the right, he found another doodle that said, ‘look to the left.’ So, when he looked to the left, he found another doodle that said, ‘look back.’ Although he began to feel bad, he looked back and found another doodle that said, ‘look up.’ When he looked up, he saw a doodle that says, ‘what are you looking at and just poop.’ Through this experience, he leaned an important life lesson, ‘no matter where you sit, you must focus on what you need to do.’
Why are we sitting in this place today? We’re here to worship God. Then it is the right attitude for us to pay attention to the worship service. Worship is a time to stop our busy steps in order to remain in the Lord. When we focus like this, we can feel the spiritual blessing such as abundance in the Lord. According to the letter sent to the Church in Smyrna, the true wealthy people are the people who believed that God was with them. Revelations 2:9 says, “I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.” Although the Lord knew so well about the suffering of the Smyrna Church, he still called them rich. Since Jesus knew all of their circumstances, he said this with a promise that he would be with them in the midst of their suffering.
​John described the Lord who was with him like this in Revelations 2:8, “the First and the Last, who died and came to life again.” Many of us seek God’s help only when we experience some kind of big problems in our lives. They don’t ask God to help them do well in their work place each day nor ask God to choose a right cloth. Why don’t people ask God to help them make a right decision as they are dealing with other people? They don’t ask God about these things because they think they are not so spiritual, but secular. They have prejudice about God since they think that God only cares about noble, holy, and spiritual matters. But our Lord who is the First and the Last is concerned about the smallest details about our lives.
In this regard, Psalm 7, what David wrote could be meaningful. The subtitle is, ‘A shiggaion[b] of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush, a Benjamite.’ Cush was not a well-known character. He was just a Benjamite like Saul. And then, he probably was not a significant person to David. Here we can find an important fact about David’s faithfulness. Psalm 7:1-2 says, “Lord my God, I take refuge in you; save and deliver me from all who pursue me, or they will tear me apart like a lion and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.” Although David thought he could win against Goliath with God’s help, he would lose a battle against Cush without God’s help. David’s attitude about Goliath was great, but his attitude about Cush was greater. Unexpectedly, there are many people who can defeat Goliath but be defeated by Cush. Who is really a rich person? It is the one who walks with God and depends on God whether they are facing big or little challenges.
