백세 시대를 맞이한 오늘, 사람들은 장수를 당연하게 생각하며 노후의 삶에 대해 많은 관심을 보이고 있습니다. 한 예로 은퇴 연금에 가입하는 사람들이 많아지고 있고 건강과 여가에도 이전에 볼 수 없을 만큼 관심을 보이고 있는데, 노후에 경제적으로나 육체적으로 자녀들에게 짐이 되지 않기 위해 준비하는 것입니다.
그런데 창세기 5장의 아담 자손 계보 중에서 에녹의 삶을 보면, 신자인 우리가 진정 관심을 두어야 할 것이 무엇인지 생각하게 합니다. 즉, 아담 자손의 계보 중, 그들이 지상에서 머문 기간을 주목해 볼 때 흥미로운 사실이 하나 있습니다. 에녹의 아버지 야렛은 962년을 살았고, 그의 아들 므두셀라는 969년을 살았습니다. 그 중간에 에녹이 있는데 365년을 살았습니다. 에녹은 그 아버지와 아들에 비할 바가 안 되는 짧은 기간을 산 것입니다. 그러나 성경은 그가 그 기간 동안 하나님과 함께 동행하며 살았다고 말씀 하는데, 이는 삶의 길이보다 중요한 것이 삶의 질이라는 강조하는 것입니다.
흔히 인간관계에서 “상대의 말을 들으려 할 때 봄이 온다”는 말이 있는데, 신앙생활에서도 하나님의 말씀에 귀가 열려 들으려 할 때, 하나님과 관계에 영적인 봄이 옵니다. 하나님의 뜻을 이해하고 그 뜻에 순종하니 하나님과 관계가 친밀하게 된다는 말입니다. 에녹이 살던 시대는 노아 홍수 심판 직전으로 사람들은 극도로 방탕한 삶을 살고 있었습니다. 그러나 에녹은 그런 시대의 조류에도 불구하고 하나님과 동행하는 삶을 택해 살기로 한 것입니다. 이는 그가 하나님의 말씀을 들음으로 하나님과 친밀한 관계로 들어갔기 때문입니다. 그 결과 에녹은 하나님의 뜻을 계시 받아 하나님이 기뻐하시는 일을 행하게 된 것입니다. 이처럼 사람이 무엇을 듣고 사느냐 하는 점은 그의 운명을 결정할 정도로 중요합니다. 그래서 하나님은 시대마다 택하신 당신의 종들을 통해 당신의 말씀을 선포하게 하여 우리를 생명길로 인도하시는 것입니다.
몇 해 전에 바하마 해변에서 한 무리의 고래 떼가 죽은 채로 발견된 적이 있었습니다. 과학자들이 그 원인을 조사한 결과, 대 잠수함 작전 중이던 미국 해군 함정에서 쏘아 보낸 수중 초음파 탐지기인, SONAR(Sound Navigation and Ranging) 때문인 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 고래 떼는 이 SONAR에 의해 뇌와 귀에 치명상을 입어 방향감각을 상실하여 해변으로 몰려와 죽고 만 것입니다. 안타까운 사실은 우리의 삶의 현장에서도 이런 일이 일어난다는 것입니다.

우리 안의 자아의 소리나 세상의 유혹 소리는 우리의 생각이상으로 강력합니다. 그 소리는 영적 소나로, 말씀으로 무장되지 않은 사람의 뇌와 귀에 치명상을 입히기에 충분합니다. 그래서 사람이 일단 그 소리에 사로잡히게 되면 누구나 방향감각을 잃게 되어 가서는 안 될 곳으로 가게 됩니다. 그 달콤한 소리에 빠져 머물러서는 안 될 곳에 머물면서 죄를 더해가는 것입니다.
에녹이 하나님과 3백년을 동행하며 하나님의 뜻을 이룰 수 있었던 것이 저절로 그냥 되었을까요? 평생 하나님께 주파수를 맞추며 하나님의 뜻을 파악하였기에 하나님 동행할 수 있었습니다. 바울은 이렇게 하나님과 동행하는 자들을 축복하며 다음과 같이 기원했습니다. “주께서 너희 마음을 인도하여 하나님의 사랑과 그리스도의 인내에 들어가게 하시기를 원하노라” (살후3:5). 여기 하나님께서 당신과 동행하는 자에게 베푸시는 복은 세상의 복과 차원이 다른 복임을 알 수 있습니다. 하나님과 동행하며 관계가 회복되면 성령이 우리 마음을 인도하게 됩니다. 그 결과 하나님의 뜻을 계시 받게 되어 삶의 변화를 이루게 되는 것입니다. 히브리서 기자는 에녹이 하나님과 동행한 일을 <믿음의 행위>로 해석하여 이렇게 증거했습니다. “믿음으로 에녹은 죽음을 보지 않고 옮겨졌으니 하나님이 그를 옮기심으로 다시 보이지 아니하였느니라 그는 옮겨지기 전에 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 자라 하는 증거를 받았느니라” (히11:5)

Today, we embrace the age of 100 years. People take longevity for granted and show great interest in the life of the age. For example, more and more people are signing up for retirement pensions, and they are showing an unprecedented interest in health and leisure,so that they could prepare to not be a burden on their children financially and physically in their later years.
However, looking at Enoch’s life in the genealogy of Adam’s descendants appearing in Genesis 5, it leadsus to think about what we, as believers, should be really interested in. Put it differently, when we pay attention to the length of lifein the genealogy of Adam’s descendants, there is an interesting fact. Enoch’s father Jared lived 962 years, and Enoch’s son Methuselah lived 969 years. In the middle was Enoch, who lived 365 years. Enoch lived a short period which was incomparable to the longevity of his father and his son. However, the Bible says that Enoch lived with God during that period, which emphasizes that the quality of life is more important than the length of life.
There is a common saying in human relationships: “Spring comes when you try to listen to others.” Similarly, in your life of faith, spiritual spring comes to your relationship with Godwhen you try to listen to God’s Word with your ears open. It means that when we understand God’s will and obey it, our relationship with God becomes intimate. In the time when Enoch lived, right before the judgment of Noah’s flood, people were living an extremely dissolute life. However, Enoch chose to live a life of walking with God despite the tide of the times. This is because he entered an intimate relationship with God by listeningto the Word of God. As a result, Enoch received the revelation of God’s will and did what God wanted. Likewise, what a person in life listens to is so important that it determines his destiny. That is why God leads us to the path of life by having His chosen servants proclaim His Word at the appropriate times.
A few years ago, a multitude of whales were found dead off the coast of the Bahamas. Scientists investigated the cause and found that it was caused by SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging), an underwater ultrasonic detector launched from a U.S. Navy ship that was in anti-submarine operation. The whales were disorientated due tofatal wounds onthe brain and ears caused by the SONAR and washed ashore to die. The unpleasant truth is that this kind of disorientation could happen in our daily lives as well. The voice of the ego in us or the voice of temptation in the world is more powerful than we think. The sound of the ego or the temptation is a spiritual SONAR and is sufficient to strike a fatal wound on the brain and ears of a man unarmed by the Word. So once people get caught up in such a sound, theylose their sense of direction and end up going where they shouldn’t go. Indulging in that sweet sound, people stay in a place where they shouldn’t stay, and their sins increase.
Did Enoch’s 300 years of walking with God and being able to fulfill God’s will just happen by itself? He was able to walk with God because he tuned in to God’s frequency in all his life and understood God’s will. Paul blessed those who walked with God in that way and prayed as follows: “May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance”(2 Thessalonians 3:5). Here we can see that the blessings that God bestows on those who live with Him are totally different from the blessings of the world. When we walk with God, and our relationship with Him is restored, the Holy Spirit will guide our hearts. As a consequent, God’s will is revealed, and changes in life are made. The writer of Hebrews interpreted Enoch’s walking with God as an act of faith and testified as follows:“By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away.
