국민일보 <겨자씨>란 칼럼에 빗길에 미끄러진 트럭이 한 주택을 들이받은 이야기가 실린 적이 있습니다. 신고를 받고 구조대들이 사건현장에 도착했을 때 두 대조적인 장면이 펼쳐졌습니다. 그들은 그 난리 중에 여주인이 깊은 잠에 빠져 일어나지도 않은 것을 보았고, 잠시 후 다른 방에서 아기가 깨어 울자 여인이 반사적으로 일어나는 것을 본 것입니다. 우리의 청각은 크게 두 가지 기능을 갖고 있다고 하는데, 그건 들려오는 소리를 감지하는 일반적인 기능과 듣고 싶은 소리만 선별해서 듣는 기능입니다. 위 사건에서 보듯, 사람이 듣기로 결심했다면 아무리 세미한 소리라도 듣고 반응할 수 있습니다. 하지만 자신이 관심하지 않는 소리는 제아무리 큰 소리도 들리지 않는다는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 음성을 듣지 못하는 것도 이런 이유에서가 아닐까 합니다. 즉 하나님께서 말씀하지 않으셔서 아니라 사실 그 음성을 듣고자 하는 마음이 없기 때문이 아닌가 하는 것입니다.
시편 108편에는 시편 57편의 주제와 시편 60편의 주제가 강조되어 나타나는데, 다윗은 왕위에 오르기 전, 사울 왕의 박해를 피하여 숨었던 아둘람 동굴에서 시편 57편을 지었고 왕이 된 후 에돔과 전쟁을 치르던 중 어려움에 처했을 때 하나님께 탄원하며 시편 60편을 지었습니다. 다윗은 위 두 사건에 겹친 것 같은 그 인생의 위기에 처해서 승리를 노래한 것입니다. “하나님이여 내 마음을 정하였사오니 내가 노래하며 나의 마음을 다하여 찬양하리로다”(시108:1). 여기서 시인은 마음을 정했다고 하는데, 그는 어떤 상황에서 어떻게 마음을 정한 것일까요? 시인은 인생의 가장 위기의 때에 하나님을 찬양하기로 마음먹은 것입니다. 이는 그가 과거의 사건에서 함께 하신 하나님을 의지하며 현실의 막막함에 갇혀 현실만 보기보다 하나님의 일하심을 믿고 미래를 바라보았기 때문입니다.

르네 마그리트라는 화가의 작품 중에 <자아상>이란 제목의 작품이 있는데, 매우 흥미로운 그림입니다. 그림 속의 화가는 탁자 위의 알을 바라보는데, 그 앞의 캔버스에는 새가 창공을 나는 그림입니다. 그림 속 화가는 탁자 위 알의 현재 모습이 아니라 그 알의 미래의 모습을 상상하며 그린 것입니다. 르네는 그 그림의 제목을 <자아상>이라 붙임으로 자신의 미래를 보여주고 싶었던 것입니다.
우리 말 ‘깨닫다’는 동사가 ‘깨뜨리다’와 ‘다다르다’는 단어의 합성어입니다. 이 단어의 의미를 새의 부화과정에 적용해 보니, 알이 새가 되어 비상하는 것은 자기 세계를 깨뜨리는 결단을 한 결과라고 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님이 쓰신 위대한 인물들은 다 이런 과정을 거쳐서 먼저 하나님의 나라를 본 선각자들입니다. 그들이 거센 저항을 받으면서도 그들이 살던 시대의 틀을 깨뜨린 데는 이유가 있습니다. 그들은 남들은 보지 못하는 세상을 그들에게 임한 하나님의 말씀을 통해 본 것입니다. “여호와여 내가 만민 중에서 주께 감사하고 뭇 나라 중에서 주를 찬양하오리니 주의 인자하심이 하늘보다 높으시며 주의 진실은 궁창에까지 이르나이다”(시편108:3,4).

스웨덴에는 “노래를 부르기 좋아하는 사람은 언제나 어디서나 노래를 발견한다”는 속담이 있습니다. 파산당하고 감사할 수 있습니까? 시험에 낙방하고 감사할 수 있습니까? 건강을 잃고 감사할 수 있습니까? 그것도 만민 앞에서 공개적으로 감사할 수 있습니까? 믿음의 눈으로 현실을 보면 우리 인생의 가장 어두운 그때가 하나님을 만날 가장 적합한 때입니다. 그래서 하나님의 이름을 부르기 좋아하는 사람은 언제나 어디서나 하나님을 발견하는 것입니다.

The column in the Kookmin Daily, a Korean newspaper, once published a story about a truck that slipped in the rain and crashed into a house. When rescue teams arrived at the scene of the incident after receiving the report, two contrasting scenes unfolded. During the mess, they saw a woman who was in a deep sleep and did not wake up. After a while, in another room, a baby woke up and cried, and they saw that the woman woke up reflexively. It is known that our hearing has two main functions: a general function to detect incoming sounds and a peculiar function to listen to only the sounds he or she wants to hear. As seen in the above incident, if a person decides to listen, he or she can hear and respond to even the smallest sound. However, the sound that you are not interested in is not heard, no matter how loud it is. Ithink this is why we cannot hear God’s voice. Put it differently, it is not because God does not speak, but because we have no desire to hear His voice.
In Psalm 108, the themes of Psalm 57 and Psalm 60 wereemphatically combined. David composed Psalm 57 in the cave of Adullam, where he hid from the persecution of King Saul before he ascended to the throne, and he wrote Psalm 60 to petition God for help while fighting against Edomafter he became the king of Israel. In Psalm 108, David sang about victory while facing a crisis in his life that seemed to overlap with the above two events. “My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul” (Psalm 108:1). Here, the Psalmist said that he made up his mind, but under what circumstances and how did he make up his mind? The Psalmist decided to praise God at the most critical time in his life. He was able to make up his mind because he relied on God, who was with him in midst of crises he encountered in the past and looked to the future, believing in God’s work, rather than being trapped in the darkness of reality and only looking at reality.
Among the paintings of artist René Magritte, there is a work titled “Self-Portrait,” which is a very interesting painting. The artist in the painting is looking at an egg on a table, and the canvas in front of him is a painting of a bird flying in the sky. The artist in the picture did not paint the egg on the table as it looks now, but rather imagined what the egg would look like in the future. René wanted to show his future by naming the painting “Self-Portrait.”
The Korean word ‘realize’ is a compound of two words ‘break’ and ‘reach’. Applying the meaning of this word to the hatching process of a bird, we can see that the egg turning into a bird and flying in the sky is the result of a decision to break its own world. All the great people used by God were pioneers who went through this process and saw the kingdom of God in the first place. There is a reason why they broke the mold of the world in which they lived despite strong resistance. They saw a world that others could not see through the Word of God that came to them. “I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations;I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies” (Psalm 108:3,4).
There is a Swedish proverb that goes, “He who loves to sing will always and everywhere find a song.” Can you be grateful after you are broke? Can you be grateful after you fail a test? Can you be grateful after you lose health? Can we be grateful publicly in front of all people? If we look at reality through the eyes of faith, the darkest time of our lifeis the most appropriate time to meet God. So, those who like to call God’s name can find God anytime and anywhere.
