우리는 지금 마이애미의 환상적인 날씨를 즐기고 있지만, 제 경우 가끔 미시간의 눈이 그리울 때가 있습니다. 눈 하면 남극과 북극의 만년설이 연상되는데, 만년설은 태양과의 각도 차이로 인해 그 지역이 빛을 받는 면적이 적어서 동토가 되기 때문이라고 합니다. 이렇게 빛을 적게 받으면 그 땅은 동토가 되어, 아름다워 보이지만 사람이 살 곳은 못되는 것입니다.
우리 마음이 가끔 냉냉한 동토가 될 때가 있는데, 신앙적 관점에서 보면 이유는 하나입니다. 하나님을 향한 영적인 각도에 문제가 생겨서 ‘은혜의 빛’을 충분히 받지 못하기 때문입니다. 하나님은 계속 은혜의 빛을 보내고 계시만, 그 심령이 그 빛을 충분히 받지 못하니 마음이 얼어붙게 되면서 하나님과 거리가 생기고 그 틈을 사단이 파고들어 우릴 속이는 것입니다. “그들이 다 자기 일을 구하고 그리스도 예수의 일을 구하지 아니하되…”(빌2:21).
빌립보서는 바울이 복음을 전하다가 옥에 갇혔을 때 빌립보에 보낸 서신입니다. 당시 바울은 빌립보 한편으로는 빌립보 교회의 후원에 감사하며 그간 이루어진 선교보고를 하고, 다른 한편으로는 빌립보 교회를 믿음의 반석 위에 더욱 든든히 세우기 위해 목회적 권면을 담아 쓴 이 중요한 서신을 들려 보내려고 사람을 찾고 있었습니다. 그러나 그 주변에 사람은 많이 있었으나 믿고 맡길 사람은 없었던 같습니다. 그의 눈에 그 많은 이들이 예수의 일이 아닌 자기 일만 구하는 것으로 보였던 것입니다. 홍수에 마시 물이 없다고, 사람은 많은 데 쓸만한 사람이 없으면 참 답답한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 서정주 시인은 그 인생의 8할이 바람이었다고 했는데, 사역은 사실 8할 이상 어느 경우는 10할이 사람에 의해 성패가 나뉘는 것을 봅니다. 한 예로, 다 죽어가던 사역도 한 사람이 바로 서면 생기를 얻어 소생하고, 잘 나가던 사역도 한 사람이 잘못 들어가면 한 순간에 사라지는 경우가 있는 것이 현실입니다.
동역자를 구하는 일로 고민하던 바울에게 하나님께서 생각나게 한 인물이 있었는데, 그가 디모데입니다. 그는 다른 이들과 달리 이미 예수의 일을 위해 헌신해 왔고, 더 헌신할 준비가 된 사람이었습니다. 이는 바울이 디모데를 빌립보 교회에 보내면서 그를 소개한 말에서 알 수 있습니다. “디모데의 연단을 너희가 아나니 자식이 아버지에게 함같이 나와 함께 복음을 위하여 수고 하였느니라”(빌2:22). 바울에게 디모데는 자기와 끝까지 뜻을 같이해 줄 사람 사역에 기운을 불어넣는 존재였던 것입니다.
여러분에게 기쁨을 주는 사람이 누구입니까? 학력이 높은 사람입니까? 재력가입니까? 외모가 수려한 사람? 구변이 좋은 사람입니까? 여러분은 어떤 분을 보면 같이 하고 싶고 기분이 좋아집니까? 바울는 자신이 디모데를 동역자로 택한 이유를 밝혔습니다. “이는 네 속에 거짓이 없는 믿음을 생각함이라”(딤후1:5). 불의로 가득한 오늘날, 거짓 없는 믿음으로 하나님의 뜻대로 사는 사람을 보면 어떻습니까? 우리 자신이 그렇게 살지 못했도 그들을 보면 눈이 정화되는 듯 하고, 얼굴이 펴지며 마음에 감동이 일어나지 않습니까?
한 아파트 지역에 사는 아이들이 놀이터에 모여서 아빠 자랑을 하기 시작했습니다. A: “우리 아빠는 S 대기업 임원이어서 회장님하고 자주 골프도 치고 하신다.” B: “뭘 그 정도 가지고. 우리 아빤 국회의원인 거 알지? 대통령하고도 얼마나 자주 만나는데…” C: “우리 아빠는 하나님 하고 얼마나 친한데, 어제도 교회 가서 하나님 만나고 오셨어.” 아이의 눈에 비친 아빠는 거짓 없는 믿음으로 산 사람으로, 다른 거 다 떠나서 잘 살았다고 말할 수 있을 것입니다.

We’re enjoying the fantastic weather of Miami right now, but sometimes I miss the snow in Michigan. When we talk about snow, we think of the icecap of the Antarctic and the Arctic. If a land receives little light like the poles, the land becomes frozen ground. Although it looks beautiful, it is not a place for people to live.
There are times when our hearts become cold and frozen, but from a religious perspective, there is one reason for the frozen heart. This is because there is a problem with the spiritual angle toward God, and people do not sufficiently receive the ‘light of grace.’ God continues to send the light of grace, but because our hearts do not receive enough of God’s light, our hearts become frozen, keeping our distance from God, and Satan uses the distance to deceive us. “Everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ…” (Philippians 2:21).
The Philippians was a letter written by Paul to Philippi when he was imprisoned while preaching the gospel. At that time, Paul was looking for a person to send this important letter to Philippi, which, on the one hand, contained his thanking the Philippian church for its support and reporting on the missionary work that had been accomplished , and, on the other hand, his pastoral advice to build the Philippian church more firmly on the rock of faith. However, although there were many people around him, it seemed that there was no one he could trust. In his eyes, many of them around him seemed to be pursuing their own interests, not those of Jesus. Just like there is no water to drink during a flood, it is frustrating to find there are no useful people in an abundance of people. Poet Seo Jeong-ju said that 80% of his life was wind, but in fact, we see that more than 80%, and in some cases, 100% of ministry, is determined by people. For example, the reality is that a ministry that was dying can be revitalized and revived when one person stands on sincere faith, and a ministry that was doing well can disappear in an instant if one person enters the wrong ministry.
As Paul was worried about finding a co-worker, there was a person whom God reminded him of, and that person was Timothy. Unlike others, Timothy was a man who had already devoted himself to the work of Jesus and was ready to devote himself further. This can be confirmed from the words Paul introduced Timothy to Phillipi when he sent him to the Philippian church. “You know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel” (Philippians 2:22). To Paul, Timothy was someone who would work together with him to the end and was someone who brought energy to his ministry.
Who gives you joy? Is he a highly educated person? Is he a wealthy person? Is he a person with a beautiful appearance? Is he a well-spoken person? What kind of person do you want to work together with and feel good about when you meet a person? Paul revealed the reason why he chose Timothy as his co-worker. “I have been reminded of your sincere faith” (2 Timothy 1:5). In today’s world full of injustice, what would it be like to see someone who lives according to God’s will with sincere faith? Even if we haven’t lived that way ourselves, when we see them, don’t our eyes seem to be purified, our faces be brightened, and our hearts be moved?
Children living in an apartment complex gathered at the playground and started bragging about their dad. A: “My dad is an executive at a large S company, and he often plays golf with the chairman. Of the company” B: “Are you bragging about your dad only with that much? You know that my dad is a member of the National Assembly. He often meets with the president.” C: “My dad is so close to God; he went to church yesterday and met God.” In the child’s eyes, the father could be seen as a man who lived with sincere faith and lived a good life, apart from everything else.
